The 25th Anniversary of the Iowanna Juniors 4-H Club fire will be on May 11, 2006. During the course of the evening’s business meeting and 4-H presentations, an explosion occurred in the house that severely injured and burned 27 4-H members, their parents, siblings and leaders. It was a miracle that no one lost his or her life that night.
In the face of this tragedy, we saw our local community come together like never before in this community. The victims became known as the “Burn Victims” and a fund was established to help those burned with the mounting expenses, which has been kept in a trust thought First Central State Bank. The youngest “burn victim” was just 18 months old at the time. That person is now 26years old, so there is no longer a need for these funds to be held.
It is at this time the “burn victims” would like to give back to the community that so richly blessed the victims in this tragedy. An annual $500 Scholarship will be given to a graduating senior from Clinton County schools. The recipient will need to have been a 4-H member for four years and exemplifies leadership skill gained through 4-H. This scholarship will be given in cooperation with the support of the Central Insurance Agency in DeWitt.
Applications are due May 1st. They can be picked up at Extension Office or www.ohnward.com link to Iowanna Juniors 4-H Scholarship Fund.
