George Dixon moved to DeWitt with his wife and 3 children in 1983. He immediately got involved in his church community. George has always had a passion for sports and signed up to coach several of his kids baseball and softball teams. During this time he also joined the civil service commission. He spoke and sang in churches around the area and gave talks at schools about fighting racism. George knew how important being active in the community was. He decided to start a chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A way to combine his faith, passion for sports, and desire to help kids. He wanted to create a place where kids could learn about God, have fun, spend time together all in a safe alcohol and drug free environment. George wanted everyone to feel like they had a place even if they weren’t involved in sports, and referred to his group as Fellowship of Christian “Anybodies”.
When his son Ivan passed away the community showed up in droves for the Dixon family to pay their respects. George didn’t just move to DeWitt to live, he moved and worked to make DeWitt a better place. After 36 years he and his wife decided to move to Colorado to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren, but George’s heart has remained in the little community he loved so much. He is so honored to stay connected to DeWitt in such a special way with this scholarship. We are hoping to find a recipient who has a big heart and a desire to make their community and world a better place.
