Harold “Coach” Birney dedicated much of his life to education, athletics, and the DeWitt community. A respected coach, teacher, athletic director, veteran, and mentor, he left a legacy defined not only by victories on the field, but by the impact he made on generations of students and athletes.
Born July 8, 1915, in DeWitt, Harold Birney graduated from DeWitt High School before attending Iowa State University and later the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. Following his military service, he returned home to begin a career that would shape the lives of countless young people throughout eastern Iowa.
Coach Birney spent decades with the Central Community School District in DeWitt as a teacher, coach, and athletic director, retiring in 1978 after a distinguished career. During his tenure, he coached football, basketball, baseball, and track, earning a reputation as a disciplined competitor and an even greater mentor. Former players remembered him as a coach who demanded effort, accountability, and character, while always believing in the potential of his athletes. One tribute described his philosophy simply: “It’s to teach boys to play fair… to teach them to never whine… and to do their best.”
His influence extended far beyond wins and losses. Former students and colleagues consistently recalled his encouragement, integrity, and genuine investment in young people. In newspaper reflections following his passing in 1986, many credited Coach Birney with teaching lessons about hard work, perseverance, and leadership that stayed with them throughout life. One former athlete wrote that Birney “wasn’t interested in being liked as much as he was in making boys into men.”
Harold Birney’s contributions to DeWitt athletics and education were formally recognized with his induction into the Central Community School Hall of Fame. Articles honoring his induction noted that he participated in athletics as a student at DeWitt High School in the 1930s and returned to shape the school’s athletic tradition for decades afterward.
Beyond athletics, Coach Birney was deeply involved in the DeWitt community. He was a member of the DeWitt United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the DeWitt Noon Lions Club, and numerous civic and athletic organizations. His passion for helping young people continued even after retirement through support of scholarships and community initiatives.
